Slovenian National Supercomputing Network

SLING activities

SLING is the central Slovenian organisational, information and infrastructure centre of the grid and supercomputing networks. SLING represents the interests of the grid networks, partners and users at national and international level, coordinates partners’ activities and supports them in joint organisational, technical and financial decisions.

SLING is the national forum for the organisation and financing of the Slovenian grid. It is responsible for coordinating the activities of the members, jointly applying for and implementing projects, testing and selecting hardware and software, jointly developing grid middleware, and managing and controlling the network and key grid infrastructure.

SLING ensures equitable management of the national grid and allows partners to use the national grid on an equal basis according to the capacity invested and will not favour particular application areas. This means that one of SLING’s objectives is to develop the Slovenian grid network in a direction that enables equal use of capacity by users from different application areas, who have different requirements and different ways of using the grid infrastructure capacity, and to ensure optimal use of the infrastructure capacity.

As a promoter of the use of grid technology, SLING provides technical and organisational support to partners and users, and promotes the establishment of infrastructure documentation systems and middleware, as well as education and training for technical staff, users and researchers. SLING supports the establishment and use of grid technology in school and especially university environments for study and research purposes, as well as to organise joint projects with academic and university organisations. Similarly, SLING aims to promote the use of technology in industry.

As the operator of the Slovenian grid SiGNET network, SLING provides monitoring and direct technical support (first line of support) for all users of the core infrastructure.

SLING acts as an intermediary between Slovenian interest groups and organisations and foreign groups and organisations, and as a representative of Slovenian stakeholders in the European Grid Initiative (EGI), where it also participates as a full partner.

SLING also acts as a forum for assistance and cooperation in setting up new virtual organisations and provides the appropriate infrastructure and organisational resources to manage virtual organisations according to the needs of Slovenian stakeholders.
