{"id":14863,"date":"2024-06-10T15:16:21","date_gmt":"2024-06-10T13:16:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.sling.si\/open-day-of-slovenian-supercomputing-centres\/"},"modified":"2024-07-05T14:56:16","modified_gmt":"2024-07-05T12:56:16","slug":"open-day-of-slovenian-supercomputing-centres","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.sling.si\/en\/open-day-of-slovenian-supercomputing-centres\/","title":{"rendered":"Open Day of Slovenian Supercomputing Centres"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Every year, the SLING consortium organises an <strong>Open Day of Slovenian Supercomputing Centres<\/strong>, inviting groups of <strong>primary and secondary school students, as well as individuals interested in the topic<\/strong>, to visit supercomputing centres all over Slovenia. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The event usually takes place on <strong>18 October, when we celebrate Exa Day<\/strong> &#8211; the word &#8220;exa&#8221; means <strong>10<sup>18<\/sup><\/strong> and is used in supercomputing to define the performance of a supercomputer. If a supercomputer can perform <strong>10<sup>18 <\/sup> floating point operations per second<\/strong> (FLOPS), it means that it can perform more than 1,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 floating point operations per second in one second. To put this into perspective, <strong>the average human being generally uses about 1 FLOPS for a simple computational operation <\/strong> such as addition. In the same amount of time, a supercomputer with exascale performance can perform 1,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 FLOPS.
